Wolf Performance Ammunition is one of the best-known value ammunition labels in the United States. It is a trademark of Sporting Supplies International, a California company, rather than a factory in its own right — Wolf is an importer and brand that has had its cartridges loaded at plants in several countries. For most American shooters the name is shorthand for inexpensive, steel-cased range and plinking ammo, especially in 7.62x39 for the AK platform and .223/5.56 for the AR-15.

What they're known for

Wolf built its reputation on cheap, reliable steel-cased ammunition. From roughly 2005 to 2009, much of its product was loaded at the Tula Cartridge Plant in Russia, and the polymer-coated steel-case lines (such as Polyformance and Military Classic) remained Russian-sourced for years afterward. Those loadings cover the core high-volume calibers: 7.62x39, .223 Remington/5.56, 9mm Luger, .308 Winchester and 7.62x54R, typically with bi-metal or steel jackets and Berdan primers — meaning the cases are not practical to reload.

Because the steel-cased lines were Russian-made, they fall under the U.S. ban on importing Russian-origin ammunition. New shipments have stopped, and remaining pre-ban inventory continues to sell through major retailers while supplies last. Wolf has also sourced non-Russian product over the years — for example the brass-cased Wolf Gold line, historically loaded in Taiwan — which is not affected by the Russian ban.

On US-GUNDEALS

Wolf sits firmly in the budget tier — it is bulk range and training ammunition, not match or defensive loads. Steel-cased Russian-origin lots are increasingly scarce and may carry a premium as stocks dwindle, while brass-cased and non-Russian Wolf product remains more freely available.
