Overview
The Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus is a polymer-frame, striker-fired, micro-compact semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9mm Luger. Introduced in 2021, it evolves the long-running, slim single-stack M&P Shield into a higher-capacity micro-compact by adopting a stacked (tapered double-stack) magazine, raising flush-fit capacity to 10+1 and extended capacity to 13+1 while keeping nearly the same slim, concealable profile. Designed for concealed carry and everyday carry, the Shield Plus also brought a noticeably improved flat-face trigger and S&W's first M&P bladed trigger safety, with optics-ready and manual-safety configurations available.
History & Background
Smith & Wesson released the M&P Shield Plus in 2021 (reviewed by American Rifleman in April 2021) as a major update to the original M&P Shield, which had been one of the best-selling concealed-carry pistols in the United States since its 2012 debut. The "Plus" designation reflects the jump in capacity made possible by a redesigned tapered magazine that fits more rounds into a grip only marginally wider than the single-stack Shield. The launch responded directly to the wave of high-capacity micro-compacts such as the SIG P365 and Springfield Hellcat. Smith & Wesson subsequently expanded the line with optics-ready models and Performance Center versions featuring ported barrels and fiber-optic sights.
Design & Features
The Shield Plus keeps the slim, rounded, snag-free silhouette that made the Shield popular, but improves capacity, trigger feel, and grip ergonomics.
- Action: Striker-fired, semi-automatic
- Capacity: 10+1 with the flush-fit magazine and 13+1 with the extended magazine; two magazines (one of each) are typically included. The tapered magazine design adds capacity with only about a 0.15-inch increase in grip width over the single-stack Shield.
- Trigger: A flat-face trigger with a lighter, crisper pull and a tactile, audible reset. It is the first M&P pistol to use a bladed (hinged) trigger safety.
- Grip: An 18-degree grip angle (consistent with the M&P family) and an aggressive, multi-zone stippled texture for a secure hold.
- Slide: Stainless-steel slide with an Armornite corrosion-resistant finish and front and rear cocking serrations. Optics-ready (OR) versions are milled to accept a micro red dot.
- Sights: White three-dot sights on standard models; Performance Center models add fiber-optic sights. Optics-ready models are cut for a red dot.
- Safety: Bladed trigger safety standard; a low-profile left-side manual thumb safety is offered on thumb-safety configurations.

Intended Use
The M&P Shield Plus is designed first and foremost for concealed carry and everyday carry as a primary defensive pistol, and its slim profile also suits backup-gun and deep-concealment roles. The improved trigger, higher capacity, and optics-ready options make it equally well suited to regular range training and personal defense.
About Smith & Wesson
Smith & Wesson is one of the oldest and most storied firearms makers in the world, and one of the few still in continuous production after more than 170 years. The name is practically synonymous with the American revolver — but today the company is just as much a force in striker-fired pistols and modern sporting rifles. For shoppers comparing prices across the dealers on US-GUNDEALS, S&W is a mid-tier brand that spans almost every category, from affordable carry guns to premium Performance Center match revolvers.
The company traces its founding to 1852, and its revolvers have set the standard for sport, duty, and self-defense for generations. Its two pillars today are the legendary revolver lines — the L-frame 686, the big N-frame 629, and the compact J-frames — and the modern M&P (Military & Police) family of polymer pistols and AR-pattern rifles.
