Hellcat

Overview

The Springfield Armory Hellcat is a polymer-frame, striker-fired, micro-compact semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9mm Luger (9x19mm). Sold in the United States by Springfield Armory and manufactured in Croatia by HS Produkt, it was introduced in 2019 as one of the first high-capacity entries in the micro-compact carry category. The Hellcat is built specifically for concealed carry and everyday carry (EDC), packing an 11+1 capacity in a flush-fit configuration into a pistol roughly the size of a single-stack. It pairs a stainless-steel slide with an aggressively textured grip frame, high-visibility sights, and an optics-ready (OSP) option, making it a leading choice in the defensive-pistol market.

History & Background

Springfield Armory announced the Hellcat in September 2019, billing it at launch as the "world's highest-capacity micro-compact 9mm." It entered a market that had been reshaped by the SIG Sauer P365, and the Hellcat's flush-fit 11-round magazine gave it one more round than the standard P365 magazine of the time. The Hellcat was well received and was named 2020 Handgun of the Year by American Rifleman. Originally offered only in black, Springfield added a Flat Dark Earth (FDE) finish in June 2020, and the line has since grown to include the larger Hellcat Pro and, in 2025, a .380 ACP version.

Design & Features

The Hellcat is a striker-fired pistol with a polymer grip frame and a stainless-steel slide finished in black Melonite. Its design priorities are maximum capacity and shootability in the smallest practical package.

• Capacity: 11+1 with the flush-fit magazine; 13+1 with the included extended magazine. Higher-capacity 15- and 17-round magazines (the latter shared with the Hellcat Pro) are also available, plus a 10-round magazine for restricted states.
• Sights: High-visibility U-Dot sight system, with a tritium and luminescent front sight and a tactical-rack rear notch. The Hellcat front sight uses a tritium center surrounded by a luminescent ring for fast acquisition.
• Optics-ready (OSP): The OSP ("Optical Sight Pistol") variant features a slide milled with a removable cover plate to accept a micro red dot directly on the Springfield/Shield RMSc-pattern micro footprint.
• Slide: Cocking serrations front and rear, with the rear serrations extending up and over the top of the slide for additional purchase when manipulating the slide.
• Frame: Springfield's "Adaptive Grip Texture" provides a secure hold without being abrasive against the body or clothing. The frame includes a short accessory rail for mounting a compact light or laser.
• Safety: A blade (trigger) safety is standard; a low-profile ambidextrous manual thumb safety is offered as an option on some models.

Variants

• Hellcat (Standard / Micro-Compact): The original 3-inch model with U-Dot iron sights.
• Hellcat OSP: Optics-ready version with a milled, plate-covered slide cut for a micro red dot on the Shield RMSc footprint, while retaining co-witness-capable U-notch sights.
• Hellcat RDP (Rapid Defense Package): Builds on the OSP with a factory-threaded barrel and Springfield's Self-Indexing Compensator to reduce muzzle rise, typically packaged with a HEX Wasp red dot.
