Ruger LCP Max

Overview

The Ruger LCP Max is an ultra-compact, lightweight .380 ACP pocket pistol made by Sturm, Ruger & Co. Introduced in 2021, it is the latest evolution of Ruger's popular LCP (Lightweight Compact Pistol) line, which dates to 2008. The LCP Max keeps the LCP II's tiny footprint and roughly 10-ounce weight but adopts a double-stack magazine to dramatically increase capacity — 10+1 in a flush-fit magazine, or 12+1 with an extended magazine — while adding upgraded sights. Hammer-fired and chambered in .380 ACP, it is purpose-built for deep concealment, pocket carry, and backup-gun use.

History & Background

The original Ruger LCP debuted at the 2008 SHOT Show as Ruger's answer to customer demand for a tiny, ultra-light .380 for concealed carry and police backup use. The LCP II followed in 2016 with a slightly larger frame, an improved trigger, and a slide that locks back on an empty magazine. In June 2021, Ruger introduced the LCP Max, the line's first double-stack model. By reworking the magazine into a flush-fit 10-round (and optional 12-round) design, Ruger more than tripled the original LCP's 6+1 capacity without meaningfully enlarging the pistol's length or weight, making the LCP Max one of the highest-capacity guns in the pocket-.380 class.

Design & Features

The LCP Max is engineered around a glass-filled nylon grip frame and a through-hardened, blued alloy-steel slide, prioritizing minimal size and weight for pocket carry.

• Action: Hammer-fired, short-recoil, semi-automatic (with a single-action-style trigger and trigger-blade safety carried over from the LCP II)
• Capacity: 10+1 with the flush-fit magazine; 12+1 with the available extended magazine. A pinky-extension floorplate is included to turn the two-finger grip of older LCPs into a fuller three-finger hold.
• Sights: A meaningfully upgraded sighting system for the class — a low-profile tritium front sight with a white outline, paired with a generous black U-notch rear sight. Both sights are dovetailed (drift-adjustable rear), and the rear is serrated and forward-canted to reduce glare and prevent snagging.
• Frame & slide: High-performance glass-filled nylon grip frame with improved stippling/texture; the LCP Max also features refined magazine feed lips, feed ramp, extractor, barrel cam geometry, and slide serrations versus earlier LCPs.
• Controls: A reversible magazine release for left- or right-handed use.
